The Republican headquarters, Lisbon street, is a busy place these days. Large crowds gather there each night to discuss the political situation and listen to the reports of progress. The Republican leaders feel entirely satisfied with the outlook and say it is only a question of how large the majority will be. A Republican worker said yesterday: “The Democrats are doomed to defeat and they know it or ought to. Wallace White Jr., will win in a walk, he is especially strong with the Franco-American voters and the Francos are with us this year.”

Frank McCann, supervisor of outdoor recreation in Maine, Fred Bartlett of the Recreation Department, and Frank Torrey, Lewiston recreation director, met with the Lewiston Planning Board Tuesday night to discuss the proposed Gulf Island Dam pond area as a possible recreation site for Lewiston. After considerable discussion, it was generally felt the area should be developed as a regional park rather than a municipal area. McCann said he felt the development was an “intriguing proposition” and added that possibly several governmental agencies might cooperate in financing the project.

Lewiston’s postmaster is once again suggesting a solution to the problems of parking outside the Ash Street post office, saying he has proposed it to the city several times before but never received any response. “There never was a problem here until the city changed the parking,” said Postmaster Roland Metayer. “So when the city calls us the number one traffic hazard, we take exception.” Metayer said the city used to allow parking on both sides of Ash Street, but several years ago removed the meters on the north side of the street and posted it “no parking.” He suggested that the city could solve the problem along Ash Street simply and cheaply — close off the first two ranks of parking in the municipal parking lot, open the gate on the Park Street side as an exit and open an accessway from the Middle Street entrance to the municipal lot.
