A witness testified today at an Interstate Commerce Commission hearing on milk transportation rates that 90 per cent of the milk sold in Boston was obtained outside the state, and dairymen of other states asserted that they sent their milk to this market at a loss. Representing the Maine Dairymen’s Association, Frank S. Adams of Bowdoinham, said the farmer was now selling his milk at a loss. Five cents a quart he estimated, would compensate the farmer and obviate most of the trouble now cropping up from time to time in the dairy business. Maine farmers according to the witness, do not want to turn their milk into butter because that would bring them into competition with Siberia and the Argentine from which butter is now being shipped to the Boston market.

Auburn property owners who may have land affected by the proposed shoreland zoning ordinance should check maps which will be on display in City Hall, Planning Director James McPhee said Thursday. Large detailed maps showing areas considered wetlands for the purposes of zoning will be on display in the lobby until the zoning ordinance amendment comes before the Planning Board for public hearing on March 14. “We’ve had quite a lot of publicity about this, stories with maps have run in the paper, but so far I’ve only had one inquiry,” McPhee said. “I’m concerned that a lot of land owners are going to be in for a surprise.”
