HEBRON — Not counting the subjects of the Revolutionary and Civil Wars, probably no subject has kept more American researchers busy than that of the early history of the sport of baseball. Where and how did it begin? Which were the earliest organized teams? Who were the first important players?
Although Larry Glatz doesn’t claim to have the final answers to these questions, he has carried out significant studies on the great American pastime – particularly as it developed in the mid-1800s in western Maine – and he will share his findings with the members of the Hebron Historical Society at the monthly meeting of the association, to be held Tuesday, March 22, at 7 p.m. at Hebron Town Office, 351 Paris Road.
Glatz is the past president of the Friends of C.A. Stephens Association, and he chaired the Oxford County Bicentennial Committee, which organized numerous county-wide events in 2005. He is the recent recipient of the Maine Historical Society’s Neal W. Allen Award for historical research, and he has written and edited several articles and books related to Maine history. (Unlike the custom at Fenway Park, there will be no charge for the refreshments served at the meeting.) The public is invited.
