SACO — At Oxford Hills Christian Academy soccer is not just an outdoor sport. A large group of varsity players from the fall are committed to playing year-round to improve as a team.

For eight weeks starting at the beginning of March, every year the OHCA Eagles make the weekly Sunday trip to Saco just to have the chance to play a sport the kids love.

The parents and coaches make the weekly journey for the players and to watch them grow and come together even further as a team.

For the OHCA spring soccer season, the game takes place on an indoor turf field surrounded by walls, much like a hockey arena. There is also a net encapsulating the top of the field.

The teams play co-ed, six versus six with modified rules but a similar style of play to outdoors.

On Sunday, March 13, they took on the Saco Dream Team, a team made up of talented high school players.

The first half of the game would be a tightly held defensive battle. The ball would go back and forth to each team for the 25 minutes of the half with only a few shots on goal.

All those shots would be blocked as the goalies for both teams would hold each team scoreless going into halftime.

Just a few minutes into the second half, the Dream Team would strike first on a tough corner shot to make it 1-0.

The Eagles would make a goalie swap to bring some speed to their front line but the Dream Team would strike again, quickly making it 2-0.

It would not take long after the swap for the Eagles Zack Wilson to land a hard shot into the back of the net to help the team crawl back in at 2-1.

The Dream Team would answer back making it 3-1 with about 10  minutes left in the game.

The Eagles would not let up as multiple shots by wings, Shannon Kostovick, Alana Carr, Niko Wilson and Matthew Albano would all come close but not make it to the back of the net.

Caleb Lynch, one of the Eagles defenders, would bring a ball just over the half field mark and score a long, strongly kicked goal to make it 3-2 with time starting to tick away.

Within the last minutes of the game, the Eagles front line would again fire off multiple shots on goal.

The talented Dream Team goalie would not buckle to pressure and hold off the flurry of shots to give her team the win.

The parents of the young Eagles team, who spent all game on the edge of their seats, congratulated both teams as they would exit the field knowing they saw a great effort by everyone involved.
