FRYEBURG — The Charlotte Hobbs Library will sponsor the screening of “BOUNCE: How the Ball Taught the World to Play” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, March 30, at the Leura Hill Eastman Performing Arts Center.

The 72-minute documentary will be followed by a question-and-answer session with Maine filmmaker David McLain.

Admission is free, donations will be accepted.

From Brazilian favelas to dusty Congolese villages, to neolithic Scottish isles to modern soccer pitches, “BOUNCE” explores the little-known origins of our favorite sports.

The film crosses time, languages and continents to discover how the ball has staked its claim on our lives and fueled our passion to compete. Equal parts science, history and cultural essay, “BOUNCE” removes us from the scandals and commercialism of today’s sports world to uncover the true reasons we play ball, helping us reclaim our universal connection to the games we love.

The movie’s deeper message will resonate with a lot of parents today: for a brain to develop properly a child needs to spend a lot of time engaged in free unstructured play, instead of static screen-watching.

The film was inspired by the book “The Ball: Discovering the Object of the Game” by John Fox.
