FARMINGTON – Lewiston native Joanne Baribault has published her first book, “Fishing with Balloons,” a story for young readers, with Oxton House Publishers.
Starting with engaging and out-of-the-ordinary characters, Baribault (writing under the pen name Dion) builds a story using unfamiliar and sometimes comical situations as it races to its conclusion.
Sam is 10 years old and has mobility problems. Readers don’t know the cause of his physical limitation, which is treated as a natural and unexceptional – but sometimes frustrating – part of his life.
Zo is 85 years old and almost blind, but she’s brilliantly talented at fishing.
This shared interest fuels Sam’s and Zo’s unconventional friendship.
Zo’s expertise and advice lead to Sam’s victory in the town’s annual Balloon Race, and to a thoughtful lesson in self-confidence.
Besides holding the interest of young readers ages 8 and up, “Fishing with Balloons” has a phonetically controlled text that emphasizes certain families of words.
Baribault is a special-education teacher in Brunswick and holds a master’s degree in literacy.
Oxton House is a publisher in Farmington that specializes in high-quality educational materials.
