PORTLAND – Bruce Molsky will bring his Appalachian old-time music to the Center for Cultural Exchange Saturday, May 15. He will conduct a two-hour fiddle tunes workshop from 2 to 4 p.m. and will perform two concert sets beginning at 8 p.m.

Molsky has been involved in numerous projects in the old-time and Celtic world, including the 2003 Grammy-nominated Fiddlers 4 (with Michael Doucet, Darol Anger and cellist Rushad Eggleston).

A guitarist, banjoist and singer, his high-spirited music melds the archaic mountain sounds of Appalachia, the power of blues and the rhythmic intricacies of traditional African music.

Molsky’s solo recording, “Poor Man’s Troubles,” won a 2001 “Indie” award for Best Traditional Folk Recording. His new solo recording, “Contented Must Be,” was released March 23 on Rounder.

He has been featured on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion” radio show with Fiddlers 4, Laurie Lewis and Tom Rozum, and with Big Hoedown.

Molsky has toured Andy Irvine’s Mozaik and extensively as a solo artist. He has performed at Lincoln Center in New York and The Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington, D.C. He toured the United Kingdom with internationally acclaimed fiddler Kevin Burke and others on the Fiddles on Fire tour.

A highly sought-after fiddle and banjo teacher, Molsky teaches his own intensive instrument workshop program all over the United States.

Tickets to the workshop are $20, and are $15 in advance and $18 at the door for the evening concert, which will also include fingerstyle guitar, clawhammer banjo and singing.
