AUBURN — The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office is offering a new program to help families who have children with Autism Spectrum Disorder.

Families can fill out a form with information and a picture of their child to help emergency responders. The information will be entered into the Sheriff’s Office records management system. By registering children and giving basic information, officers will be better able to ensure a safe outcome in the event of an emergency.

Autism training has been a part of the Maine Criminal Justice Academy training for new officers since 2006, and it is also a mandatory training topic for officers already on the road in 2016-17. The class is taught by a retired law enforcement officer who has a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder.
