Hobo Holiday at railroad club

AUBURN — The Great Falls Model Railroad Club will host a Hobo Holiday Saturday, May 21, at 144 Mill St.

This is a family event with five permanent operating model railroad layouts in various scales, including Thomas the Tank Engine. A scavenger hunt encourages exploration of the entire two-story, wheelchair-accessible building, including the library and company store.

Participants will learn about railroad history in a handout explaining hobo culture and folklore. Hobo symbols placed around the building will warn hobos about potential dangers and identify places where they are welcome. Since railroads are private property, and hobos rode the trains illegally, there will also be a railroad safety quiz using posters and details from Operation Lifesaver.

Dressing like a hobo is optional but fun.

Admission costs $3, and children 12 and younger are free.
