BUCKFIELD — Descendants of the Parris family will be in Buckfield on July 4 for the annual Fourth of July firing of the King’s Arm musket.

The Parris family donated the musket to the Zadoc Long Free Library in 1950. It was made in England in 1683 and it came to the colony of Massachusetts with the ancestors of the Parris family.

The Parris family members coming to Buckfield plan to bring photos of the 2016 Fourth of July event to share at their large annual summer Parris family reunion in Michigan.

The musket will be fired at 9 a.m. on the library’s front lawn. The event is open to the public. Light refreshments will follow inside the library.

Other programs this summer include:

The Summer 2016 Reading is Fun Program: 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. Tuesdays, July 12 through Aug. 23. Tom Standard, an experienced “oral tradition” storyteller from Sumner, will tell stories to children ages 4 to 11. Other guests will also make an appearance. Space is limited, so parents are encouraged to stop by the library or call 207-336-2171 to register their children before July 12.

Lighthouse Keeping and Light HouseKeeping: 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 13. Ernest DeRasp will present a program at Zadoc Long Free Library on a book he authored along with his late wife, Pauline, titled “Lighthouse Keeping and Light HouseKeeping.” The DeRaps lived in and operated lighthouses on the Atlantic coast for several decades. Together they raised their children at these lighthouses, where they were stationed by the U.S. Coast Guard.
