Fifty Italian will arrive in Auburn from Boston to begin grading on the Auburn-Turner electric line. E.L. Fogg of Lewiston is now superintending the construction of a camp and store house to be occupied by the Italian laborers while engaged on the Turner road. The camp will be located near Long Pond.

50 Years Ago, 1954

New York – Commissioner Ford Frick and the American and National League contenders decided to keep ticket prices for the World Series the same as in 1953, and to open the Series, as expected, in the National League park. Ticket prices will be $10 for box seats, $7 for reserved seats, $4 for standing room, and $2 for the bleachers. On all games played in New York or Brooklyn a 5 cent city sales tax must be added.

25 Years Ago, 1979

Hotel and campground managers in Vacationland had plenty of work over Labor Day weekend as many prepared to close for the season. But no one seemed to mind. Reports from Old Orchard Beach to Bar Harbor showed the state’s No. 2 industry – sagging earlier this summer as gas supplies dwindled – was “terrific” and “fabulous” this weekend. The Maine Turnpike Authority says 2,750 people traveled out of Maine past the Kittery toll booth from 11 a.m. to noon Monday. A spokesman said the traffic would peak about 5 p.m. The increase in tourists is mostly due to a growing confidence in gasoline availability, industry spokesmen say.
