100 years ago, 1916
The public utilities commission today issued a supplementary order that the proposal of the Lewiston, Augusta & Waterville Street Railway to restore the original five-cent limit at Harris Hill Road for persons riding between that point and Mechanic Falls . . . in this case be approved, so that the distance between Hackett’s Mills and Mechanic Falls shall be divided into two zones, three-cent and five-cent respectively.

50 years ago, 1966
Approximately 450 Auburn youngsters participated Thursday in Fun Day activities sponsored at Pettengill Park by the Auburn Parks and Recreation Department. Merrill Hill playground came out on top in the team scoring, totaling 30 points with Moulton and Fairview second at 12 points followed by Washburn with nine, St. Louis and East Auburn, eight, and Pulsifer, four.

Geometry just isn’t what it used to be. Gone are the days when you had to be a high school sophomore to get your first crack at a parallelogram. Now this study of points, lines, surfaces and solids is being introduced in the fifth to eighth grades, and youngsters are learning concepts about shapes through games, puzzles and origami (the Japanese art of folding paper). And it’s fun, judging from the enthusiasm displayed at the Geometry Institute going on last week at Bates College. The participants were 16 Maine middle school teachers who seemed like youngsters themselves as they worked in a Hathorn Hall classroom Thursday morning.
