100 years ago, 1916
Six years ago last night two woodsmen entered a Main street lunch cart and ordered three frankfurters (alias “wienies” and “hot dogs) each. Within a few minutes the clerk was surprised to hear them order three more each. “If you fellows are going to eat any more let me know so I can keep an account of them,” said the waiter. And when he had finished he found the men had consumed 17 hot dogs and a cup of coffee apiece. The men have not been seen since. Last evening a party of autoists stopped at the cart and ordered five “dogs.” They came back four times and ordered five each time. On their sixth trip to the cart two were ordered and on the final trip one was the limit. This made 28 for the party of five, but the record of 1910 still stands.

50 years ago, 1966
A young Auburn man has entered this demanding, yet highly satisfying, field of falconry with a great deal of success. Henry Davenport of 1420 Upper Turner St., Auburn, speaks of his remarkable work with “Red,” a beautiful Western red-tailed hawk, with more modesty than it deserves. Seeing him release the big bird to fly oft to some high perch, and then coax him back to his arm makes one marvel at the time and effort involved in winning this confidence. ”It’s not for everyone.” Davenport warns. “It isn’t something you hang up on the wall until hunting season rolls around.” He pointed out that keeping a hawk — or a falcon, if you’re lucky enough to have this classic bird of the ancient sport — is a year-round proposition.

25 years ago, 1991
About 120 teenagers are participating in this week’s Technology Exploration Camp at Central Maine Technical College. A pilot program, it was offered by Mountain Valley Training to youths from Androscoggin, Franklin and Oxford counties.
