WILTON — Organist James Armstrong will return to his hometown to perform on the Austin pipe organ at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7, at First Congregational Church UCC.

The service will include the rededication of the pipe organ, installed in 1921.

As a teenager, Armstrong served as church organist at First Congregational Church from 1948-52 . He studied organ at Harvard University, receiving his Ph.D in music in 1969. Over the course of his career he served as Cornell University organist, director of choral activities at Connecticut College, chair of the Music Department at Colby College, and music director and organist at Christ Episcopal Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He retired in 1999. Since then he has served several churches in the San Francisco Bay Area, and has performed as a concert organist.

The public is invited. Donations will be accepted to help cover organ restoration costs.
