By a vote of 166 to 113, the employees of the various divisions of the Lewiston, Augusta and Waterville Street Railway at a secret meeting held at Auburn Hall, last evening, went on record in favor of the organization of a union. A committee, representative of the divisions — Lewiston, Augusta, Freeport. Lisbon Falls and Bath — was appointed at the conclusion of the meeting. This committee will meet at its convenience and will decide on what steps the men desire to take toward organization.

The Lewiston Urban Renewal Authority has instituted eminent domain proceedings for the taking of seven properties which will be used as the site of the city’s housing for the elderly project. Entered Friday in Androscoggin Superior Court, the eminent domain proceedings cover property in the Park Street Urban Renewal Project. According to the court entry, the URA has offered a total of $165,350 for the seven properties concerned in the area of Ash and Park streets.

At exactly 12:01 a.m. Sept. 4, the Maine Turnpike Authority will change the way it’s always done business. All points north of New Gloucester will not have the traditional ticket system but will, instead, use the barrier coin-toss method of collecting fees. These changes are part of a plan that has been a year in the making, according to Paul Violette, who in October announced the start of construction to replace the present ticket toll booths with mainline barriers and coin-toss booths on the ramps.
