CASCO — Loon Echo Land Trust and Southworth Planetarium, along with the Casco and Raymond libraries, are inviting the public to view the Perseids meteor shower at 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, at Hacker’s Hill Preserve.

At its peak, up to 60 meteors per hour will stream across the sky. The shower seems to originate from the constellation Perseus, giving rise to the name Perseids. In between shooting stars, participants will have the chance to gaze through telescopes, high-powered binoculars and become familiar with apps for smartphones and tablets which make learning about the night sky more accessible.

Attendees should meet at the summit of Hacker’s Hill at 9 p.m., but those wishing to see the sunset should arrive around 7:30 p.m. They should bring a lawn chair, bug spray, drinks and snacks.

Hacker’s Hill Preserve is located at the height of land on the north end of Quaker Ridge Road. Parking is available in the area to the right of the summit.

The program will last about three hours. Rain date is Aug. 12.
