FREEPORT — The University of Maine Cooperative Extension and Wolfe’s Neck Farm invite farmers and the public to a pasture walk at 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 11, to see how the apprentices are managing the farm’s new organic dairy herd.
Four apprentices are enrolled in Wolfe’s Neck Farm Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship program, aimed at increasing the production of organic milk in the Northeast while fostering the next generation of organic dairy farmers.
Joe Tomandl from Dairy Grazing Apprenticeship in Wisconsin will be on hand for the pasture walk. Joining him will be Rick Kersbergen with the University of Maine Cooperative Extension and DGA’s Maine education coordinator.
Sarah Littlefield, Wolfe’s Neck Farm’s dairy director and a Master Grazer, will discuss how the cows are rotated and the fields managed to provide top-quality forage to the organic grazing herd.
Wolfe’s Neck Farm is located at 184 Burnett Road. Cows will head to the milking parlor at 4:30 p.m.
