KITTERY (AP) – A group of Kittery residents is working to acquire a historic grocery store that’s slated to go on the block at an April 24 bankruptcy auction.
Frisbee’s 1828 Market at Kittery Point was the nation’s oldest grocery run by the same family. Frisbee’s and Cap’n Simeon’s Galley, the seafood restaurant behind the store, closed in February.
Dennis Estes told the Portland Press Herald on Tuesday that residents formed a group called Point Partners LLC that wants to take over the businesses and protect them from redevelopment.
The waterfront property has been in the Frisbee family for 181 years before a fire, the death of an owner and the slumping economy forced the liquidation.
