Soap Box Derby this weekend

WEST PARIS — The West Paris Soap Box Derby will be at 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 13 and 14.

The event is free. Participants with helmets will build their own car or use available cars and compete. There will also be fire rescue demonstrations and kids’ activities such as a fishing pond and a bouncy house, live music and refreshments.

Blood drive at OHCHS

PARIS — St. Catherine of Sienna will sponsor an American Red Cross community blood drive from 12:30 to 6:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 15, at the air-conditioned cafetorium of the Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School.

Three double red chairs will be available for those who wish to donate platelets. Those who donate will receive a $5 Amazon gift certificate.

Dick’s founder at Historical Society

MEXICO — The Mexico Historical Society will meet Monday, Aug. 15, at the society building at 3 Oxford St.

The guest speaker will be Dick Vienneau, founder of the first Dick’s Restaurant in Mexico back in the 1950s. Vienneau graduated from Mexico High School in 1949, served in the U.S. Navy and now resides in Florida during the winter and Roxbury Pond during the summer.

A potluck dinner will be held at 5 p.m. followed by a short meeting before reminiscing with Vienneau about “the good old days” around Mexico Corner.

SeniorsPlus local outreach hours

NORWAY and FRYEBURG — SeniorsPlus has scheduled two local stops to answer any questions or concerns individuals may have about services or resources for older adults and adults with disabilities or their families.

Norway Town Office: 2 to 4 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 17.

Fryeburg Library: 1 to 4 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22.

Historical Society to hear about Civil War doctor

PARIS — The Paris Cape Historical Society will host Richard Cylik at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at 77 High St., South Paris.

He will discuss the life and practice of a Civil War physician.

The society heard for Marsha Cylik in July, who demonstrated the attire of women in the Civil War era. She used her mannequin Jezebel, and started with the pantaloons, continued with the various petticoats and hoops under the skirt, and ended with the jacket and hat.

The public is invited.

Unity, healing and un-doing racism

DENMARK — Unity, healing and un-doing racism will be the topic of a free community discussion and exchange from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18, at Nurture Through Nature.

The workshop is an opportunity to break through myths, learn about the affects of institutionalized racism, discover ways people are prejudice and see what exists on the other side of separation. The intention is deep listening and understanding, which leads to healing and unity.

Antique, collectible show vendors sought

LIVERMORE — The Livermore Falls Women’s Club Antiques and Collectibles Show will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Livermore Community Center. 

The club is looking for individuals who have antiques, vintage items or collectibles to sell. Due to the limited space available, only table top items should be displayed.

This event is a fundraiser to help support the many charities that the Women’s Club aids.

Finishing first in N/S flight A were Mike Quinn and Mike True; second, Cynthia and Bill Clifford Jr., who also were first in flight B; third, Rosemarie Goodwin and Luke Merry; fourth, Nancy Farmer and Henry Deutsch; second in flight B were Cindy and Bob Kirchherr; first in flight C and third in B, Ellie and Lindy Wigton; and fourth in B, Jim Krainin and Milt McKeen Jr., who also were second in flight C.

Finishing first in flight A E/W were Nancy Lindgren and Richard Balian; second, Dick Allen and Nick K; third, Neanie Kivus and David Lock; first in Flight B, Norma and Rick Verrill, who also were fourth in A; second in B, were Diana and Frank Ferland, who also were first in flight C; third in B, Martha Cunningham and Claire Lyons; and third in B, Denny Raymond and Dave Kallander, who also were second in flight C.

Games are played at 9:15 a.m. Fridays at the Oxford Recreation Building on King Street. All players are welcome, and a partner is guarenteed.
