WEST PARIS — On Thursday, Aug. 18, at 6:30 p.m., the West Paris Library will host an opening reception. talk, and slidewhow for an exhibit of 30 photographs and pen-and-ink illustrations  by Sharon Garvey entitled “Moonlight and Indian Pipes.” The illustrations appear in Edward B. Garvey’s book, “The New Appalachian Trail.”

Sharon and her husband, Tim Wisecarver, live in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia, and summer in Otisfield at Wisecarver‘s family home. Sharon spends many hours, day and night, photographing sights from nature, much of it from her own back yard.

From a young age, she accompanied her father, Edward B. Garvey, on hiking and camping trips. Garvey, a well- known hiker and conservationist, instilled in her an appreciation for the beauty and wonder of the natural world. “The New Appalachian Trail” was published in 1997, just two years before his death. In it Garvey recounts the challenges he faced attempting a second thru- hike of the Appalachian Trail at age 75. His first book, “Appalachian Hiker: Adventure of a Lifetime,” published in 1971 after his first completion of the trail, raised public awareness of thru-hiking.

Sharon earned a bachelor of fine arts from the University of Notre Dame, having been a member of the first class of women admitted to the school. She completed a master’s degree in liberal studies at St. John’s College in Santa Fe, N.M., and subsequently became a member of the faculty, teaching there for several years. Her training and long-term involvement in art have led her to work, at one time or another, in all of the usual two-dimensional media, as well as some of the more unusual three- dimensional media, such as pumpkin sculpture and pyrography.
