LEWISTON — The YWCA’s Tiger Sharks Swim Team is starting its 2016-17 season.

The club is for youth swimmers interested in a more competitive environment. Swimmers will learn the basic fundamentals of competitive strokes and being part of a team in a positive and encouraging environment. Coaches will focus on stroke development, increasing endurance, nutrition and dry-land conditioning. All swim members will practice at the same time to build team spirit. Swimmers will be placed in lanes with others of the same ability and speed to enhance learning and promote safety.

The new head coach is Will McCorkle, certified USA Swim coach and former coach at Machias Valley Swim Club. McCorkle is a recent graduate of the University of Maine at Machias with a degree in recreation.

To qualify, swimmers must be able to swim two continuous laps (50 yards), one freestyle and one backstroke.

Session I is from Oct. 3 to Dec. 15. Registration must be completed by Sept. 23.

Session II is from Jan. 9 to March 9, 2017. Registration must be completed by Dec. 28.

There will be free skills and drills training for swimmers on Dec. 19, 20 and 21.

The team will participate in USA Swim meets. Travel is required. Cost is $185 per session. USA Swim fee is $67, plus event and swimmer fees. Swimmers must have current YWCA memberships. Payment plans are available.

There will be a parent meeting Tuesday, Sept. 27. All parents must attend. Members are expected to participate in fundraising for the team.

Practice times are 5 to 6 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays, and 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. It’s recommended swimmers attend three practices per week.

Aqua Kickboxing will be offered from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. The classes combine aqua movement, music and the fundamentals of kickboxing. No experience is necessary and being in shape is not necessary.

The class is included in water fitness program, so those with fitness memberships are not charged an extra fee. For this class only, drop-in fee is $8 per class.

The gigantic indoor water float is offered from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sundays.
