MASHANTUCKET, Conn. (AP) – The Mashantucket Pequot tribe and the United Auto Workers say they’ve made a deal to start negotiating a union contract under tribal law for some workers at Foxwoods Resort Casino.
Both sides also announced Friday that they won’t be waiving their rights under federal labor law. The UAW represents 2,600 gambling dealers at the eastern Connecticut casino.
Tribal officials and union leaders agreed in early October to 30 days of talks aimed at determining whether an agreement could be reached to bargain under tribal law, without giving up their rights under federal law.
The National Labor Relations Board has ordered Foxwoods’ management to bargain with the union, and told the tribe it must recognize the UAW as the lawful representative of the dealers.
