DEAR SUN SPOTS: Last year we had a hard time finding whole yellow peas for sale locally. I believe one of your readers had written in to Sun Spots looking for these also, since this is an important ingredient in some French-Canadian family recipes for pea soup. I am told by my elders that the soup would not be the same with split yellow peas.
I am pleased to say I have found 16-ounce bags of Goya whole yellow peas at Shaw’s on East Avenue in Lewiston. However, they are not located with the dried beans. They are located in the “Shop the World” aisle. Hopefully this will help another family enjoy traditional pea soup. — No name, Auburn.
ANSWER: Thank you for sharing this very useful information. Sun Spots is very happy to print updates to past answers as they certainly help more than just the person asking.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Could you please tell me why the Sun Journal does not print the golf scores of Maine colleges? They print the pros and high school scores, college football, basketball and soccer, but not golf. Why not? — No name, Auburn.
ANSWER: Sun Spots let the Sports department here at the Sun Journal field this question. Here’s what they had to say:
With a smaller staff and limited space, we are forced to make decisions on a daily basis regarding which scores get in, and from which leagues and levels. To do that, we must take into account overall interest while also realizing our mandate is to cover our local high schools as in-depth as possible.
Every night we make a choice based on the number of eyes we think will be looking for the information we print on the scoreboard page, and while we know the pro scores, the money they earn and the points they accumulate has a definite audience among golfers of all kinds — and many others who are not golfers — the college game is not as widely followed, and we feel other items we run on a day-to-day basis will be of more interest to a larger number of people.
