AUBURN — Members of the Auburn Art Club are preparing for the 2016-17 season.
Next spring, the club will present a scholarship to a graduating senior at Edward Little High School who is pursuing study in the arts. To fund this endeavor, the club will hold an auction at 2 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, at the Park Avenue Methodist Church on Park Avenue. Guests are welcome.
Hostesses will be Janet Sullivan, Benita Flynn, Grace Keene, Mary Ann Norcross, Sue Morgan and Donna Sweetser.
The club was organized in 1880 and federated in 1892. In its early days, the club held meetings in homes, and various members would present programs such as Venetian relics or archeological discoveries. Professors from Bates College would often be invited to speak.
Last spring, the group voted to expand membership beyond Auburn residents. The group now welcomes any woman interested in becoming an active participant. The club is limited to 50 members, and has 41.
The club has always maintained a close relationship with the Auburn Public Library. It made a significant donation to the library’s new building in 1902. It donated its library of over 200 volumes to the library. The group presents a book to the Auburn Public Library in memory of any member who dies.
Club programs cover travel, photography, quilting, painting, jewelry-making and writing, as well musical presentations, dramatic readings and living history programs.
