PORTLAND – To celebrate the many benefits provided by Maine’s 17 million acres of woodlands, Forests for Maine’s Future will host the second annual All Things Wood Expo this weekend.
From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday there will be a full day of activities for children and adults, and 50 exhibitors at the Portland Exposition Building. Admission is free.
According to a news release, adults can learn about geo-caching, spring mushrooms, backyard birds, and more. Geo-caching is an outdoor treasure-hunting game in which participants use a navigational device or techniques to hide and seek containers.
The Chewonki Foundation, Maine Discovery Museum and Tanglewood 4-H Camp will offer woods-oriented activities for children, including live owls and meat-eating plants. Smokey the Bear will also be there.
The Patten Lumbermen’s Museum will talk about old-time logging.
The featured performer is Tina Scheer of the Great Maine Lumberjack Show in Trenton. Scheer, who was a contestant on “Survivor: Panama” in 2005, competes regularly in logging sports contests.
During three shows, she will demonstrate the tools and techniques of the trade and talk about the history of logging in Maine.
Exhibitors will include wood products firms, conservation organizations, outdoor recreation businesses, forest management companies, and several others.
The Maine Bowhunters Association will teach children and adults how to shoot a bow.
People can also learn the latest about Lyme disease and other insect-borne diseases from the Maine Medical Center. For more information, visit www.forestsformainesfuture.org.
