LEWISTON – Now that all the hoopla surrounding FairPoint’s successful purchase of Verizon land lines has died down, one local business is girding for a flurry of activity of its own.
FISC Solutions on Lisbon Street expects nearly $500,000 in new equipment to arrive by month’s end that will allow it to process the 700,000 payments it will handle monthly for FairPoint customers.
The back-office and payment services company was selected by FairPoint last fall to handle the communication company’s payment processing, an example of the commitment FairPoint would make to Maine companies if its purchase of Verizon was successful. The contract is worth $1 million, making it FISC’s biggest customer.
“We’re really, really excited,” said Carol Sabasteanski, FISC president, on Thursday.
Once the new software and equipment are installed, the company will hire about 10 additional employees to handle the increased workload. The contract increases the volume of payment processing at FISC by about 70 percent.
Sabasteanski said the FairPoint contract gives FISC the opportunity to market itself to a whole new level of customer.
“The next client will think, ‘If they can handle FairPoint, they can handle us,'” she said.
FairPoint’s $2.3 billion deal to acquire Verizon’s phone lines and Internet operations was finalized March 31. Based in North Carolina, FairPoint is now the eighth largest telephone company in the United States. While seeking approval from Maine regulators, FairPoint promised to extend broadband service to 83 percent of Maine within two years.
The Verizon deal included operations in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Northern New England comprises about 85 percent of FairPoint’s holdings. It previously held about 300,000 lines; now it’s 1.9 million.
