DEAR SUN SPOTS: The YWCA Central Maine in Lewiston is looking for donations for their Holiday Fair on Nov. 19. We are looking for items in good condition to be donated such as jewelry, holiday decorations, glassware, etc. Proceeds from this fair help support the many programs that the YWCA provides for our community. Any donations need to be dropped off at the YWCA by Friday, Nov.18. Thank you for your support. — Lu Murphy, no town.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Store Next Door Project at Lewiston High School is revving up for its 10th Annual Holiday Village drive. Our project relies 100 percent on this community of ours to support the basic needs of hundreds of local youths and families experiencing housing instability and homelessness. Since it is challenging to shop for others, we will not only be shopping for gifts but will also be providing gift cards, movie and snack passes, bowling gift certificates, etc. To see how you can help please call Mary Seaman or Meg Dumais at 207-795-4190. See how you can support your neighbors this holiday season. — Mary, Lewiston public schools.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: Are there any elections in which a person enrolled as an independent cannot vote? — No name, no town.
ANSWER: Checking the box and designating yourself as independent simply means that you have no party preference or affiliation. In the state of Maine, this means that you cannot vote in primary elections because you are not registered with any of the recognized parties. Simply put, you have to register as Republican, Democrat, Green Independent, Libertarian, Maine Patriot Party or Unity Party, to get a say in who those parties choose as their candidates. Luckily, if you feel very strongly about a candidate in a primary election, you can register with that party as late as that day at the polls and have your vote counted.
DEAR SUN SPOTS: The Temple Historical Society has recently acquired Mt. Blue High School yearbooks to add to our book collection and to assist in keeping a record of the students from Temple who graduate from Mt. Blue High School each year. The collection starts with 1999 but we are missing 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2008. If anyone has a yearbook that they would like to donate that would help in completing the set, we would be most appreciative. A society member can be reached at 207-778-0837 or by email at [email protected] — Betsy Graves, Temple.
