JAY — Spruce Mountain High School inducted nine new members into its chapter of the National Honor Society on Nov. 21.
Inducted were Gabrielle Beaudoin, Moreland Brochu, Alana Cole, Lauren Cornelio, Jordan Daigle, Allyssa Ellis, Tanna Herlihy, Hailee Perkins and Lilly Towes.
The students are members of the sophomore, junior and senior classes who have been identified by the faculty as having outstanding character and leadership abilities, as well as having provided community service and maintaining a cumulative GPA of 92 or higher.
The evening ceremony included a speech by guest speaker Attorney General Janet Mills, who reminded the students of many Maine citizens who took on leadership positions, such as Margaret Chase Smith, George Mitchell and Joan Benoit Samuelson. She encouraged the new inductees and current inductees to continuously look for opportunities to lead and to give back to the community through service. The evening concluded with each new National Honor Society inductee being introduced by a current NHS member.
Projects the Spruce Mountain High School National Honor Society students are working on this year include:
* Volunteering at the local food bank;
* Visiting a local nursing home; and
* Doing upkeep on community gardens.
Earlier that day, the current members helped with Thanksgiving food baskets that will feed more than 600 community members of the Tri-Town area.
The NHS chapter’s current members include: Trevor Doiron, president; Rylee Saunders, vice president; Austin Gilboe, secretary; Camryn Berry, treasurer; William Brenner; Devon Darling; Rylee Delaney; Tad Jewett; Gabrielle Richards and Bryan Riley. The group’s adviser is Jessica Ellingwood-Simpson.
