Manager Elwell, captain Pedbereznak and Dr. William Ness, coach of the Bates hockey team, completed plans for a skating club for the people of the twin cities last night. The club will use the surface of Andrews Pond and also the college rink. This will be kept cleared of snow all winter. A membership fee entitles the members to skate on the pond three nights a week for at least two months and as much longer as the ice lasts. Manager Elwell will return after vacation December 26 and this plan will be put into operation at once.

The Androscoggin County Jail has been rated one of the top jails in Maine in the semi-annual jail report filed by state agencies. The report listed the county jail as “very good” but the jail inspector went further with glowing remarks. He commented: “From a jail inspector’s point of view, it is indeed gratifying to note the continuing progress and improvements that have been completed over a given period of time; the main purpose being to benefit the confined inmate from a rehabilitative standpoint.”

“New Horizons” is the second in a series of family literacy programs being sponsored by Lewiston Adult Education and Head Start. The programs, held Mondays at the Lewiston Public Library, are designed to promote daily reading to pre-school children. Parents are given a children’s book that they read and share with their families. At the weekly meetings, the children’s books are discussed with particular attention paid to the ideas that each story generates and how these ideas might be applied to their everyday life.
The material in Looking Back is reproduced exactly as it originally appeared, although misspellings and errors made at that time may be edited.
