AUBURN — The YMCA of Auburn-Lewiston held its second annual Hall of Fame Celebration and annual meeting Dec. 8 at Martindale Country Club.

Steven Wallace, CEO of the YMCA, said, “Our Hall of Fame event is about celebrating the men and women who have made the YMCA such an integral part of L-A over the last 148 years. It is also a call to action for everyone involved — The Y still has a lot to do.”

More than 125 people turned out to recognize the 2016 Hall of Fame inductees: Stephen B. Austin, Muriel Bureau, James D. Lawler and Pennell Woodard.

Attendees were treated to live music from Three Point Jazz Trio and video testimonials from those closest to the honorees, as well as highlights of the YMCA’s impact serving the greater Androscoggin communities.

Austin was recognized for his more than 20 years of service on the Y’s Board of Directors and for his contributions during critical leadership transitions.

Known as the early morning face of the YMCA, volunteer Bureau of Auburn was honored for her nearly 30 years of service to members.

Lawler, whose name is synonymous with the YMCA throughout the Lewiston-Auburn community, is a former executive director of the Y. During his tenure, the Y made substantial growth in its endowment and launched programs in fitness and child care that today remain the foundation of the organization’s business model.

Pennell Woodard, who passed away in early November of this year, was honored posthumously. A lifelong Y member, Woodard held a variety of leadership volunteer positions and was among the founders of the Y’s historic Biddy Basketball program.
