PORTLAND — Donald C. Spring, 90, of Lexington Avenue passed away on Thursday, Dec. 29, following a brief illness.

He was born in Portland, a son of Fred C. and Edith M. (Johnson) Spring. Don graduated from Deering High School in 1944, New Hampton School in New Hampshire in 1945, and in 1949 from Bowdoin College where he was a member of the Theta Delta Chi fraternity. He married Carolyn (Kay) Grey in 1949.

Don was a teacher at Kingfield High School from 1949 to 1951 and had fond memories of his time there. He worked for several years for Canal National Bank as a loan officer. He returned to teaching at Lincoln Middle School in Portland where he worked for 23 years as a seventh-grade science teacher. He was part owner of Spring’s Parking on Park Street for many years. He retired in 1986.

He was instrumental in establishing the Allen Avenue Unitarian Universalist Church at their present location. Don was very proud of his daughter, Renee, and enjoyed playing with his grandchildren, Nicole and Jackson, when they were young and seeing their progress as adults.

He was an over 50-year member of the Masons, and was in the Kora Shrine, Order of the Eastern Star and Woodfords Club.

He was predeceased his wife in 2004, after 55 years of marriage.

He is survived by his daughter, Renee Phelan and her husband, Peter, of North Monmouth; grandchildren, Nicole Phelan of New Gloucester, and Jackson Phelan and his wife, Breanna, of Auburn.
