1928 – 2017
SCARBOROUGH — Sylvia B. Day, 88, of Portland, and formerly of Lewiston, died Sunday, Jan. 1, at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough.
A “leap year” baby, born in Lewiston on Feb. 29, 1928, she was the daughter of Nathan and Ida Silverman Benson. She graduated from Lewiston High School, Class of 1945, and later received a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maine, Orono.
On June 26, 1949, she married Charles Day, and for 53 years she was his loving wife, until his passing Oct. 9, 2002. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, and enjoyed time spent with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include two sons, John and wife, Shelley, of Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., and James of Auburn; a daughter, Jayne and husband, Greg Thornton, of Falmouth; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Day, Julie Peretz, Nicholas Thornton, Elizabeth Thornton and Jillian Maiorino; and three great-grandchildren, Emma Day, Owen Peretz and Jack Peretz.
