AUBURN — The Woman’s Literary Union will host singer Larry Gowell in concert at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 29, as part of Auburn’s 2017 Winter Festival.
Gowell, an Auburn native, will  perform a wide array of songs.
Gowell has been singing since he was a teen, performing in the school choir and band and as a trumpet soloist. After five years of trumpet lessons he made his first recording at the age of 13. He grew up in a musical family, singing around the piano, organ and guitar at home. His brother is a singer, guitar player and songwriter.
Music has always been Gowell’s second love, after baseball. He was signed to the New York Yankees as a fourth-round draft pick in 1967 as a pitcher and went on to play eight years in the pros, including a short stint with the big club in 1972.
Gowell has performed in many choirs and has been song director for several churches. He started singing solo at age 33.
When he turned at 61, Gowell decided it was time to devote his life to music. He started performing concerts at nursing homes all over the state of Maine. He soon was singing at all the major venues and events in Central Maine.
This is a cabaret-style performance.  The doors open at 1:30 p.m., refreshments will be served and the performance starts at 2:15 p.m.  Refreshments will be served.
Donations at admission will benefit the restoration fund for the Horatio  and Ella Foss Mansion.
