John Davids has ridden a Harley-Davidson since 1971, but he has no body piercing or tattoos. He prefers a leisurely ride in the countryside over one at breakneck speed. In some ways, he fits the profile of a cruiser rider, according to a survey by Progressive Insurance. In some ways, he does not.

The results showed that:

• 52 percent have tattoos and/or body piercings.

• 1 percent ride for speed.

• 32 percent ride to find a restaurant.

• 40 percent say their second favorite activity is cooking.

• 58 percent spend one to five hours a week taking care of their bikes and 24 percent spend that amount of time with their kids.

And while the Top 4 reasons for riding are freedom, travel, visiting friends and getting something to eat, the No. 5 reason is “to dry their hair.” For the record, Davids of Elgin said he spends an hour a week attending to his bike. “It takes that much time just to clean it,” he said. And while you may find him in a restaurant, don’t look for him in the kitchen. “The only thing I know how to make is a reservation.” And drying his hair? “It’s never occurred to me,” he said.
