AUBURN – A new Tim Hortons is planned for the intersection of Hotel Road and Minot Avenue.
The site, just south of Ouellette’s Market, was approved by the Planning Board at its October meeting. It’s awaiting final approval from the state before construction can begin.
“We’re looking at construction starting next spring and then opening in the fall,” said Chris Branch, project manager for TSI, the engineering firm that made the presentation before city planners.
The 2,800-square-foot building will have a pitched roof and clapboard siding, a new New England design that better blends with local architecture, Branch said. There will also be a considerable amount of landscaping done to the lot.
“The landscaping will be modeled after the Maine Family Credit Union across the street,” said Branch. The credit union was another TSI project. “I think they’ll be mirror images with a similar type of layout.”
The store will be the ninth franchise in Maine of the Canada-based coffee and baked goods chain.
The site will share a curb cut off Minot Avenue with another parcel next door, said David Galbraith, city planner. There are no specific plans submitted for the adjacent parcel, but planners want to control traffic through the heavily traveled corridor. According to the Androscoggin Transportation Resource Center, there are about 20,000 cars per day that travel that section of road.
Two single-family homes on the lot will have to be demolished before the store can be built.
Tim Hortons has about 2,350 stores across Canada and a growing U.S. presence. There are 228 American stores.
Tim Hortons is a subsidiary of Wendy’s, the fast food hamburger chain. In 2003, the coffee operation generated 43.9 percent of Wendy’s income.
The franchise was founded by a legendary NHL defenseman Tim Horton, who played 22 years primarily for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
