Q. I just have a question on America Online. I’m wondering why I don’t see it in the paper any more listed in the stocks. Is it under another name now? …

E.S., Seekonk, Mass.

A. Yes. Effective Oct. 16, AOL Time Warner Inc. of New York, the giant media and entertainment company, dropped the “AOL” from its name and now refers to itself simply as Time Warner Inc.

Time Warner also changed the ticker symbol under which its stock trades on the New York Stock Exchange. It’s now TWX instead of AOL.

Many newspaper stock tables also changed the way they list the company’s stock. Before the change, you typically could find it listed as “AOL TW.” Now, depending on which table you consult, you may find it listed as “TimeWarn.”

At the time the change took effect, the company’s chairman and chief executive officer, Dick Parsons, said, “The Time Warner name more accurately represents the portfolio of our valuable businesses, all of which are making important contributions to the company.”

Bloomberg News reported at the time that Time Warner dropped AOL from its name after the 2001 merger with America Online led to a sharp drop in the company’s market value.

You can get more information about the company and the name change at Time Warner’s Web site: www.timewarner.com.
