FARMINGTON – Franklin Memorial Hospital’s medical laboratory has been awarded accreditation as the result of an on-site inspection by the College of American Pathologists.

Suzanne O’Brien, FMH director of laboratory services, was advised of this national recognition and congratulated for the “excellence of the services being provided.”

The laboratory is one of more than 6,000 accredited by CAP.

During the process, inspectors examine the laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years. They also examine the entire staff’s qualifications, the laboratory’s equipment, facilities, safety program and record, as well as the overall management of the laboratory. This inspection program is designed to specifically ensure the highest standard of care for the laboratory’s patients.

“The goal of accreditation is to improve the quality of clinical laboratory services, and ensure the accuracy and reliability of test results through an educational and peer review inspection process,” said O’Brien.

Jill Berry Bowen, FMH chief operating officer, said, “The CAP’s program is the most respected and recognized laboratory accreditation program in the world and has long been considered the gold standard against which others are measured. We’re very proud that our lab has received this recognition.”
