PORTLAND (AP) – The Portland City Council is entering new negotiations on a proposal to redevelop the Maine State Pier with a hotel, office building and park.
The city’s original deal with The Olympia Cos. was scuttled because of an unresolved dispute over ownership of the submerged land underneath the pier.
Monday night, the council voted 7-2 to open talks with Olympia’s competitor, Ocean Properties. One of those voting in favor of reopening negotiations was a councilor who formerly served as a paid community organizer for Ocean Properties.
Not all residents were happy with the vote. Even after 2 years of debate, some residents said they deserve a greater say on the development.
