PORTLAND (AP) – A Palmyra man who allegedly confessed to a 1995 fatal shooting has been charged with murder, Portland police said Sunday.

An initial court appearance is slated Tuesday for 46-year-old Steven Richard Cutting, who is currently at the Cumberland County Jail.

Portland police said investigators were contacted Saturday with information about the slaying of William Greenwood, who was found shot to death in April of 1995 behind Maine Mack on Warren Avenue.

Saturday’s contact was attributed to the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the information that was passed along came from a relative of Cutting’s.

Portland police said Cutting was located in Casco and brought to Portland, where he allegedly repeated his confession with detail that had been previously undisclosed to the public.

Police Deputy Chief Bill Ridge said he was unaware of Cutting having obtained a lawyer.

Authorities said that since the initial investigation 13 years ago, numerous leads had been followed without result.
