WATERVILLE (AP) – Josephine Misunas has thought about retiring from volunteer work at a soup kitchen in Waterville, but friends who work with her won’t have any of that.

She may be 96 years old, but Misunas is in great demand at the Sacred Heart Soup Kitchen. She’s been working there for 17 years and has hardly slowed down despite arthritis that stiffens her fingers.

Misunas makes tea and coffee and serves juice. And if help is needed in the kitchen, she’s there too.

Misunas has thought about retiring. But soup kitchen cook Sheila Gaulin says that one day when Misunas didn’t work, things went haywire. Dick Willette, who runs the kitchen, calls her “very dependable” and the best volunteer around. The facility has 42 volunteers.
