YORK (AP) – Townspeople in York are giving a thumbs down to a proposal to relocate an aging Maine Turnpike toll plaza to another part of town.
Residents went to the polls on Saturday to vote on selectmen’s races, budget issues and other items.
Also on the ballot was a nonbinding referendum asking voters if they approved of the Maine Turnpike Authority’s plan to relocate the toll plaza to another site in York.
According to the town, 383 voters approved of the relocation plan while 3,614 residents opposed it.
Turnpike officials have narrowed to four the number of sites being considered for a new high-speed toll plaza to replace the existing facility at the southern end of the turnpike. But many residents are unhappy with the locations under consideration.
Some say they will result in homes being taken and neighborhoods being broken up.
