PORTLAND (AP) – The Maine Civil Liberties Union will honor Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap and two legislators next month for their work in opposing the federal Real ID national identification card.
The MCLU says Dunlap, Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Mitchell and Republican Rep. Scott Lansley will be presented the 2007 Roger Baldwin Award at the MCLU’s annual meetings on Jan. 9 and 10 in Portland and Bangor.
The civil rights group says the three were instrumental in leading a national revolt against the Real ID law by passing a state resolution objecting to it. Sixteen other states followed suit and implementation of the law has now been put on hold. The award is named for the founder of the American Civil Liberties Union, Roger Baldwin.
