FORT FAIRFIELD (AP) – Conditions were improving on a river that runs from Maine to New Brunswick where the search continued Sunday for a missing 3-year-old girl, but there was still no sign of her.

Alexandra Winship-Wright was reported missing Wednesday from her home in Fort Fairfield, Maine, prompting a search involving several agencies in Maine and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in New Brunswick.

Mark Latti, a spokesman for the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, said two boats and about 15 ground searchers continued looking along the Aroostook River in Maine on Sunday. In New Brunswick, the RCMP and officials with the Tinker Dam, which sits on the Aroostook, continued watching for signs of the girl.

A pair of Alexandra’s boots was discovered Wednesday in two different areas in Maine, but no other items belonging to the girl have been found since.

While the river’s high water levels and fast current have hampered the search, Latti said conditions were improving, with the water levels dropping more than 3 feet since the search began.

Divers searched two areas on Friday, and Latti said they could return as the water becomes safer to dive in.

Search-and-rescue officials hope the falling water levels will reduce the amount of runoff in the river, making it easier to spot anything in the water. An aircraft has been waiting to rejoin the search, but poor visibility had prevented it from taking off for the past two days.

Alexandra’s mother has said she left her daughter in their home room unattended for a moment, and when she returned a sliding glass door that leads to the river was open. Maine child welfare workers have taken a baby away from the girl’s mother, Mandy Wright.

Police and Department of Health and Human Services workers went to Wright’s apartment overlooking the river to take away her youngest child, 1-year-old Cassidy Paradis.

Game wardens and other officials continued the search this weekend with boats on the water and searchers on the riverbank. The search was expected to continue until Sunday evening, and resume again this morning.
