BIDDEFORD (AP) – A Biddeford High School student was stabbed in the stomach Tuesday, but a student who was initially taken into custody was released without being charged, police said.
School officials called police at about 9:20 a.m. to report the stabbing. When officers arrived, they found the victim in a bathroom with a knife sticking out his lower abdomen, said police spokeswoman JoAnne Fisk.
The victim, who was conscious and talking, was taken to Maine Medical Center, Fisk said. He was reported in good condition later in the day.
Police took a 16-year-old boy who had been in a fight with the victim last week in a dispute over a girl into custody, but the boy was later released without any charges being filed. Police said they had gotten conflicting statements from witnesses.
“Until we interview the victim, we won’t be in a position to rule in or out if there is a perpetrator,” Fisk said.
After the stabbing the school was put in lockdown mode, and students were later released for the day. School officials said the school was scheduled to open at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
