ROCKPORT (AP) – State officials Monday were seeking to confirm the identity of a man who died after apparently falling into a campfire in his backyard.

Maine public safety officials said the body of the man was discovered Sunday evening by a friend who had gone to the house to check after the man had not been heard from in a couple of days.

Fire investigators said they believe the victim was Richard Thomas, 57, who was known to sit around a fire at night in the back yard of his home where he lived alone.

The body was taken to the state medical examiner’s office for autopsy.
