LEWISTON (AP) – James Horan, a longtime faculty member at the University of Maine, died of injuries suffered last month in a car crash in Rumford.

Horan, a 70-year-old professor of public administration and political science, was injured when a car driven by his wife Sally veered off Route 2 on Dec. 28 and slammed into a tree.

A professor at UMaine since 1965, Horan also served in various administrative roles on the Orono campus. During the early 1980s, he was vice president for planning and public affairs.

Among those mourning his death was U.S. Sen. Olympia Showe, who recalled that Horan was her academic adviser while she was a student at the university. She remembered him as “a source of inspiration and guidance to whom I will always be deeply indebted.”

Horan died Sunday in a Lewiston hospital. Sally Horan, 73, was seriously injured in the accident.

A funeral Mass for James Horan will be celebrated Friday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Orono.
