SHAPLEIGH (AP) – A bikini-clad hot dog vendor will keep her spot near Mousam Lake but beginning next year will have to move her truck when she sets up her food cart.
The town’s Board of Selectmen voted 2-1 Tuesday in favor of a compromise following a three-hour closed-door discussion among selectmen, Maine Department of Transportation officials and Katharine Schultze and her attorney.
The decision means Schultze, who is known as The Hot Dog Lady, can continue parking her 1953 Ford pickup truck on the roadside closest to the lake beach until Labor Day. Next year, she will have to park her truck on the other side of the road and wheel her hot dog stand to the beach side.
“At long last, they made the right decision,” said Schultze, whose grandparents launched Schultz Hot Dogs and who is the only family member left in the frankfurter business.
The dispute began last year when the town passed an ordinance prohibiting parking on the side of the road where Schultze hawked hot dogs, lemonade and other food.
Town officials said they passed the ordinance and installed no-parking signs after receiving complaints that Schultze’s setup was a safety hazard at the intersection of routes 11 and 109.
But Schultze and others questioned that argument, and some suggested that Schultze’s work attire might be the real motive. Schultze also asked why parking was an issue after she’d been operating her business the same way for 10 years.
Next year, Schultze may have to compete for her spot with other vendors. Selectmen said they cannot reserve the space near the beach entrance for Schultze, and it will be open to vendors on a first-come, first-serve basis.
