ALFRED (AP) – A Massachusetts man who admitted that he killed a woman by tying her between two trees and cutting her wrists and throat was sentenced Friday in York County Superior Court to 60 years in prison.

Walter Moore, 43, was charged with murdering Connie Gagliardi, 41, of Salem, Mass., whose body was found by a bow hunter in the Rachel Carson Wildlife Refuge in Saco in September 2002.

During his trial last August, Moore changed his plea from not guilty by reason of insanity to guilty after he heard his taped confession to police. A defense lawyer said it was the first time Moore had heard the tape.

Investigators said Moore was a transient who was taken in by Gagliardi. Police believe they traveled to Maine together and that Gagliardi was murdered on Sept. 4. 2002. Moore stayed at an Old Orchard Beach motel that night and returned to Massachusetts the next day on Amtrak’s Downeaster.

Murder in Maine carries a prison sentence of 25 years to life.
