YARMOUTH (AP) – State police went to the public Tuesday seeking information about a car used by an assailant to escape after shooting a New Hampshire man in a parking lot in broad daylight.
Witnesses told troopers that the assailant drove off Monday evening in a small black car with damage to the front grill or bumper.
The victim, Julius Petrovic, 60, of Bretton Woods, N.H., was shot inside his Ford Escape at 4:10 p.m. Monday at the tourist information center on U.S. 1. He was pronounced dead at the Maine Medical Center.
Investigators were told that a black car was seen driving erratically between Brunswick and Freeport. A man got out of similar car and urinated in the parking lot before shooting Petrovic.
At least one witness questioned whether Petrovic had said something to the man about urinating in public.
Investigators were still trying to determine the motive for the shooting and whether the men knew each other, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.
McCausland said the car’s driver was described as a white man with a rugged build who was wearing a long, light colored shirt. A passenger was in the car, but there was no description.
Lois Allen of Tampa, Fla., who heard a single shot, said it was frightening because the shooting happened on a sunny afternoon in a fairly busy area. “You don’t think that anybody will shoot,” she said. “It’s broad daylight.”
Allen said she dialed 911 while her husband ran to assist the victim.
Petrovic was a summer employee of the Spruce Point Inn in Boothbay Harbor and had worked during the winter on Sanibel Island, Fla., McCausland said. An autopsy was scheduled Tuesday.
