Maine’s per capita debt – the amount each resident owes on the average in state bond debts – is on the decrease for the fourth consecutive year, state Treasurer Dale McCormick said. Per capita debt dropped to $267 in 2002 from $289 a year earlier.

Maine’s per capita debt is the lowest in New England, McCormick said, and also far lower than that of some states. Connecticut’s comparative figure is about $2,000, the treasurer said.
